How to Evaluate a Water Softener Resin Listing

By Editorial TeamFiled 2026-08-13

Those details establish the resin family and starting ionic form. They do not establish a numeric crosslink percentage. The current official specification says that the polymer is crosslinked with DVB but does not state 8%, 10%, or another percentage.

That omission matters because marketplace sellers commonly use crosslink percentage as a comparison claim. Our guide to 8% versus 10% water softener resin explains why the percentage can affect oxidative and physical durability. For C100E specifically, however, an “8%” label should not be repeated as an official fact unless the seller provides current, grade-specific manufacturer documentation.

Documented specifications#

Evidence pointOfficial C100E specificationWhat it means for a homeowner
Polymer structureGel polystyrene crosslinked with divinylbenzeneConventional gel cation-resin construction

Ionic formNa+ formAppropriate starting form for a conventional sodium-cycle softener
Total capacity, minimum1.9 eq/L, or 41.5 kgr/ft³, in Na+ formA laboratory total-capacity specification, not programmed operating capacity
Moisture retention46%–50% in Na+ formA defined product-control range useful for identity and condition checks
Particle-size range300–1,200 µmMust remain compatible with the unit's screens and hydraulics
Material below 300 µm1% maximumLimits the undersize fraction
Uniformity coefficient1.7 maximumDocuments the permitted breadth of the bead-size distribution
Reversible swelling, Na+ to H+10% maximumRelevant when resin changes ionic form
Reversible swelling, Ca2+ to Na+8% maximumRelevant to the softening and regeneration cycle
Specific gravity1.27A physical property of the hydrated resin
Approximate shipping weight50.0–52.5 lb/ft³Useful for handling expectations, not proof of package volume
Temperature limit120°C, or 248°FA material limit, not a recommended household operating temperature

Capacity requires careful interpretation#

A residential unit normally operates below the resin's total theoretical capacity. Actual capacity between regenerations depends on the salt dose, water chemistry, flow, regeneration procedure, leakage target, and equipment design. Use the softener manufacturer's programming table or obtain settings from a competent water-treatment professional. Do not substitute the data-sheet total for the control valve's usable-capacity setting.

Particle size and uniformity are not cosmetic details#

C100E has a documented particle range of 300–1,200 micrometers, with no more than 1% below 300 micrometers and a maximum uniformity coefficient of 1.7. These values describe a standard distribution rather than a fine-mesh grade.

Bead size affects hydraulic resistance, backwash behavior, and the ability of the bottom distributor to retain the resin. A homeowner should not assume that a resin is compatible solely because the tank volume matches. A damaged distributor or an unsuitable screen can allow resin into household plumbing.

Certification: what the evidence supports#

NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 concerns the health effects of materials and components that contact drinking water. It must not be presented as proof that C100E removes a specified contaminant, produces a particular softening capacity in every appliance, or certifies a complete softener assembled with unrelated parts.

Certification can also depend on the exact model designation, manufacturing facility, current listing, and authorized marking. Therefore, use this sequence before purchase:

Packaging and seller traceability#

  • 1 ft³ sack
  • 25 L sack
  • 5 ft³ fiber drum
  • 1 m³ supersack
  • 42 ft³ supersack

The 1-cubic-foot sack is the format most directly relevant to many residential rebeds. “Typical packaging” does not prove that every online offer is factory-packed, that a listing photograph shows the delivered bag, or that a third-party seller has maintained a documented chain of custody.

This distinction is important on affiliate marketplaces. A product page can combine offers from different sellers, and fulfillment details can change without changing the page title. Our affiliate link is a route to inspect an offer, not independent proof of authenticity.

Before buying, compare the required tank quantity with the offered package volume. Do not use approximate shipping weight alone to infer cubic feet: the official sheet describes an approximate bulk shipping-weight range, while the softener requires a specified bed volume.

A traceable purchase should let you identify the manufacturer name, exact product designation, package quantity, seller, and applicable certification marking from the offer and delivered documentation. If those points cannot be reconciled, return the product before opening it.

Appropriate residential use cases#

C100E is a reasonable candidate when all of the following are true:

  • The appliance uses a conventional sodium-cycle cation resin.
  • The objective is hardness softening rather than contaminant-specific filtration.
  • The required bed volume is known.
  • The valve and distributor can handle the documented bead-size range.
  • The water temperature remains within the softener and plumbing system limits.
  • The incoming water has been assessed for sediment, iron, manganese, and oxidants.
  • A current, correctly identified package is available from a seller you can verify.

It is less suitable as a blind upgrade when the existing resin problem has not been diagnosed. New resin will not repair a cracked distributor, blocked injector, failed control valve, incorrect programming, inadequate backwash, or contaminated brine tank.

If the old unit still passes hard water after regeneration, first confirm that it draws brine and completes its cycle. If a rebed is justified, follow the tank depressurization, distributor protection, fill, sanitization, and startup instructions in our guide to replacing water softener resin.

Prefiltration and resin protection#

Prefiltration must address the measured problem. A sediment stage and an activated-carbon stage perform different jobs.

Heads up

A sediment cartridge does not establish chlorine-removal performance. If chlorine or another oxidant is the concern, use water-test results and documented treatment performance to design the pretreatment stage.

Evidence limits of this review#

This review assesses the official specification sheet, manufacturer certification resources, WQA's explanation of product certification, documented package formats, and residential compatibility questions. It does not establish:

  • The contents or authenticity of an uninspected marketplace package.
  • A fixed retail price or lowest-price seller.
  • The delivered resin's age or storage history.
  • A guaranteed service life.
  • A household operating capacity at a specific salt dose.
  • Compatibility with every valve, tank, or distributor.
  • Removal of iron, chlorine, manganese, PFAS, or other contaminants.
  • Certification of an entire softener merely because its resin is certified.

The relative price tier in the product entry is an editorial comparison band, not a current checkout price. Verify the live offer, quantity, shipping terms, and seller before purchase. Because marketplace availability and certification records can change, this direct-affiliate review should be refreshed within 120 days.

Verdict#

Its main limitation is equally clear. The official sheet does not publish a numeric DVB crosslink percentage, so this review cannot validate retail claims that C100E is specifically an 8% resin. Certification also applies within the certifier's listed scope; it is not a contaminant-reduction claim or certification of the assembled softener.

Buy C100E after confirming resin volume, equipment compatibility, water conditions, and current package identity. If sediment or oxidative attack caused the old bed to fail, correct that upstream condition before expecting replacement resin to provide durable service.
