How to Choose Water Softener Resin: 8% and 10% Crosslink
The best water softener resin is not simply the bag with the largest advertised “grain” number. For a defensible replacement, match the resin’s ionic form, bed volume, particle size, certification, and hydraulic requirements to the softener. Crosslink percentage matters, but only when the manufacturer or an authoritative certificate documents it.
Before choosing 8% or 10% crosslink resin#
These products are strong-acid cation resins. Their sulfonic-acid functional groups exchange sodium ions for hardness ions such as calcium and magnesium. In a residential sodium-cycle softener, brine restores sodium to the resin during regeneration.
“8%” and “10%” normally refer to the proportion of divinylbenzene used to crosslink the styrenic gel matrix. The percentage is not a universal performance rating. Resin formulation, bead quality, particle distribution, regeneration conditions, oxidant exposure, and water chemistry also affect service.
For well water, do not use crosslink percentage as a substitute for testing. Measure hardness, iron, manganese, pH, turbidity, and other locally relevant contaminants. Suspended solids can collect in the bed, and iron can foul ordinary resin. Install prefiltration only after the water analysis and peak-flow requirement are known.

Do not assume every product sold under a familiar resin name has the same provenance. Confirm the sealed bag, lot identification, ionic form, package volume, and exact manufacturer designation before opening it.

- Chemistry: Does the manufacturer identify the polymer matrix, functional group, ionic form, and crosslink percentage?
- Capacity: Is total exchange capacity published in a comparable volumetric unit?
- Potable-water status: Does the manufacturer document an applicable WQA or NSF certification?
- Residential fit: Is sodium-cycle or residential softening an identified application?
- Packaging and installation: Is package size documented, and are important hydraulic limitations disclosed?
A criterion received a full pass only when current first-party literature answered it. Partial documentation did not receive the same weight as an explicit statement. We did not conduct laboratory testing, inspect retail bags, measure chlorine resistance, or verify current retail prices. The product data contains editorial price-tier fields used elsewhere on the site, but this review did not use those fields to award budget, value, or price-based recommendations.

Resin does not replace correct prefiltration#
Use a sediment prefilter when measured or observed particulate loading justifies it, and size the housing for peak household flow. An undersized cartridge can create unacceptable pressure loss. Do not place arbitrary filter media inside the softener tank; different media can require different service and backwash rates.
For oxidized iron or manganese, remove the precipitated material before the softener. For clear-water ferrous iron, the correct treatment depends on concentration, pH, dissolved oxygen, competing contaminants, and resin-cleaning provisions. Manufacturer statements that a resin resists or removes iron do not establish that it is suitable for every well.
Municipal chlorine or chloramine exposure should also be quantified before selecting carbon prefiltration. Carbon system design requires contact time, flow, media selection, and microbiological safeguards. A small cartridge is not automatically adequate whole-house treatment.
Replacement checks before buying#
Confirm these items before following our water softener resin replacement procedure:
- The tank’s resin volume, not its marketing “grain” label
- Sodium-form strong-acid cation chemistry
- Standard- or fine-mesh distributor compatibility
- Required freeboard for backwash expansion
- Valve injector and drain-line condition
- Current hardness and iron settings
- Potable-water certification required by the installation
- Sealed manufacturer packaging and traceable product identity
After rebed work, follow the softener and resin manufacturers’ start-up, backwash, regeneration, and rinse instructions. Do not place the unit into drinking-water service until rinse water meets the applicable instructions and is clear of loose resin.

Frequently asked questions#
Is 10% crosslink resin always better than 8% resin?#
No, not directly. CG8-H is supplied in hydrogen form and is described for industrial applications that require hydrogen-form cation resin. A conventional residential sodium-cycle softener needs a compatible sodium-form product such as CG8-HP, C100E, C-800, or C-800F.
Does NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 certification prove that resin will soften water effectively?#
No. NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 addresses health-effects requirements for drinking-water system components. It does not establish a softener’s working capacity, salt efficiency, flow performance, or ability to treat a specific water supply. Those questions require product data, equipment specifications, and water analysis.
