How to Compare Big Blue Filter Housings

By Editorial TeamFiled 2026-08-13

The important mismatch in this comparison#

The names “Big Blue” and “heavy duty” describe a general large-diameter housing format. They do not guarantee the same cartridge length, connection thread, mounting pattern, or package contents.

Key specifications at a glance#

A housing pressure rating is not a recommended household pressure setting. It is an equipment limit or operating range. Account for pump cycling, thermal expansion, pressure surges, local plumbing rules, and the pressure limits of every other component. Use a regulator when the installation requires one.

How we evaluated#

Selection date: August 9, 2026.

Inclusion criteria: We considered all three named candidates. A direct-match candidate needed to accept a nominal 20 x 4.5-inch large-diameter cartridge, connect to a 1-inch water line through documented NPT ports, and provide manufacturer evidence for its pressure limit. We also checked pressure relief, third-party structural certification, warranty, and included service hardware.

Evidence limits: We did not pressure-test, flow-test, install, or disassemble these housings. We did not use marketplace ratings as evidence. Specifications come from manufacturer product pages, specification sheets, warranty documents, installation manuals, and compatible-cartridge pages. Retail bundles can change, so confirm the seller’s package list before ordering. We also found no stable evidence that establishes a lasting exact-price advantage; all three are therefore treated as the same broad relative price tier.

Unweighted scoring rubric: Each product earns one point for each manufacturer-documented item below. Every item has equal weight.

  1. Correct 20 x 4.5-inch cartridge class.
  2. Exact 1-inch NPT connection specification.
  3. A documented operating or maximum-pressure specification.
  4. A documented manual pressure-relief control.
  5. Third-party material or structural-integrity certification.
  6. Both a housing wrench and mounting bracket documented as included.

For cartridge selection, match the housing with a suitable option from our guide to the best sediment filter cartridges. Micron rating, filter construction, water quality, and actual flow demand matter more than the housing brand alone.

HB28B is consequently a credible substitute when the plumbing design and cartridge inventory already use the 20-inch large-diameter class. Its included wrench removes one small purchase from the initial installation list. The manufacturer’s package section does not list a mounting bracket, however, so verify the exact bundle rather than assuming a bracket appears in every retail box.

Serviceability and installation implications#

Inspect, clean, lubricate, and correctly seat the specified O-ring during service. Never use petroleum grease on a drinking-water housing seal; follow the manufacturer’s lubricant instructions.

A prefilter also creates pressure loss. The housing’s empty-vessel rating does not predict pressure drop through a loaded sediment cartridge. Cartridge material, micron rating, sediment loading, flow, and replacement timing determine the working restriction. Size the cartridge for peak household demand and monitor pressure on each side when pressure loss is operationally important.

Value comparison#

Current exact prices vary by seller, package, and promotion, so we do not name a cheapest product. All three occupy the same broad relative price tier in this comparison.

Compare the complete bill of materials: housing, bracket, wrench, valves, unions, pressure gauges, fittings, spare O-ring, and first cartridge. A low housing price can be misleading if essential mounting or service parts are separate.
