How to Choose a 20-Inch Big Blue Filter Housing

What qualifies as a 20-inch Big Blue housing?#

“Big Blue” describes the large-diameter housing format associated with cartridges approximately 4.5 inches in diameter. It does not mean that every housing using the phrase has the same ports, pressure rating, certification, or included hardware.

For this comparison, a product had to meet all of these inclusion requirements:

  1. Be a single-cartridge housing intended for a nominal 20-inch, large-diameter cartridge.
  2. Accept a cartridge approximately 20 inches long and 4.5 inches in diameter.
  3. Have ports suitable for a whole-house water line.
  4. Have a manufacturer-published working-pressure limit.
  5. Provide enough model-specific documentation to distinguish verified facts from marketplace claims.
  6. Be sold as a serviceable housing rather than only as part of a fixed multi-stage system.

These requirements matter because a housing is a pressurized plumbing component. Cartridge marketing cannot establish the housing’s safe working pressure, port thread, certification, or replacement-part compatibility.

Quick specification comparison#

The published maximum rating is a ceiling, not a recommended operating target. A system also needs protection from pressure surges, thermal expansion, freezing, and unsupported pipe loads. Installation must comply with the housing instructions and local plumbing requirements.

How we evaluated#

We used an unweighted six-point evidence rubric. A housing received one point for each item that the manufacturer documented for the exact model:

  1. Nominal 20-by-4.5-inch cartridge compatibility.
  2. Inlet and outlet size and thread type.
  3. Maximum working pressure.
  4. A pressure-relief control.
  5. Identifiable maintenance hardware or replacement parts.
  6. Independent material or structural certification.

Every item has equal weight. The score measures documentation and serviceability; it does not represent laboratory performance, durability, filtration effectiveness, or owner satisfaction. We did not pressure-test, install, or disassemble these products.

This exclusion is an evidence decision, not a claim that the housing is defective.

Installation and cartridge considerations#

A large housing does not guarantee low pressure loss. The cartridge’s media, micron rating, surface area, sediment loading, and flow rate all affect differential pressure. A fine cartridge can restrict flow even when the empty housing has large ports.

For a serviceable softener prefilter:

  • Install isolation valves so the housing can be depressurized without shutting down more plumbing than necessary.
  • Provide a bypass if continuous water service is important.
  • Support the housing and adjacent pipe independently.
  • Leave enough space below the sump to remove a wet, full-length cartridge.
  • Use the specified O-ring and inspect it during each cartridge change.
  • Record clean-cartridge pressure and replace the cartridge based on differential pressure, water conditions, and the cartridge manufacturer’s limit.
  • Protect the housing from freezing and pressure excursions.
  • Do not use the pressure-relief button as a substitute for closing the water supply and safely depressurizing the assembly.

A sediment prefilter can protect a softener from suspended particulate matter, but it does not soften water. Likewise, a conventional sediment cartridge does not automatically treat dissolved iron, manganese, hardness, microbiological contamination, or every chemical contaminant. Match the cartridge to a current water analysis.
