How to Replace Water Softener Resin Safely
To replace water softener resin, bypass and depressurize the softener, remove the control valve, empty the mineral tank, and inspect the distributor tube. Reload the documented gravel and resin quantities while keeping media out of the tube. Reassemble the valve, restore water slowly, sanitize exactly as the manufacturer directs, regenerate, rinse, and check for leaks.
The physical work is straightforward, but the setup decisions are model-specific. Before opening the tank, confirm four facts: the correct resin volume, whether the tank uses a gravel underbed, the distributor-tube arrangement, and the valve manufacturer’s startup and sanitation instructions.

Do not treat this guide as a substitute for the service manual. Stop if the tank is damaged, the valve cannot be isolated, the bypass does not hold, or the distributor assembly does not match the available parts diagram.
Decide whether a rebed is the correct repair#
Resin replacement can address an exhausted, contaminated, or physically degraded resin bed. It will not repair a control valve that fails to regenerate, an obstructed injector, a failed brine draw, an incorrect hardness setting, or an undersized drain-flow control.
Before buying resin, verify that the softener:
- Has an uninterrupted water supply and electrical supply.
- Leaves bypass and returns fully to the service position.
- Advances through regeneration.
- Draws brine during the brine-draw stage.
- Sends a stable flow to the drain during backwash and rinse.
- Refills the brine tank as its manual specifies.
- Produces hard water even after a complete, otherwise normal regeneration.
Inspect the old resin when it comes out. Broken distributor components, resin in the drain, or resin reaching household fixtures points to a containment problem rather than resin exhaustion alone. Pentair identifies damaged distributors, an incorrectly seated riser, and a cracked riser tube as possible causes of resin loss.
If sediment, iron, or another measurable contaminant repeatedly fouls the bed, correct the source or prefiltration problem before installing new media. Determine the resin quantity before opening the tank#
The best source is the model label or manufacturer’s specification sheet. Do not estimate resin volume from a marketed “grain capacity” alone. Capacity depends on the resin, salt dose, control settings, and system design.
Pentair’s current 5600SXT system specifications illustrate common residential combinations:

These are examples, not a universal tank-sizing chart. Two tanks with similar external dimensions can have different distributors, freeboard requirements, gravel quantities, or service configurations. Match the tank and valve to a documented system specification whenever possible.
Also confirm whether the replacement is standard 8% cross-linked resin, 10% cross-linked resin, fine-mesh resin, or another specified medium. Photograph the equipment label, valve connections, bypass position, drain line, brine line, and control settings before disassembly. Record the resin and gravel quantities separately.
Tools and materials#
Prepare the work area before isolating the softener:
- Correct quantity and type of replacement resin
- Correct gravel grade and quantity, but only if the system specifies an underbed
- Resin funnel sized for the mineral-tank opening
- Caps, tape, or a clean plastic cover for the distributor tube
- Buckets, drain hose, wet vacuum, or another controlled media-removal method
- Clean water suitable for filling and rinsing
- Replacement valve and distributor O-rings specified for the model
- NSF-approved silicone lubricant if the manual calls for it
- Eye protection, gloves, and dust protection appropriate to the media instructions
- Manufacturer-approved sanitizer and measuring equipment
- Towels and a dry inspection area for leak testing
Do not use petroleum grease on potable-water O-rings unless the equipment manufacturer explicitly permits it. Pentair’s media-loading instructions specify NSF-approved silicone lubricant for the control-valve O-rings.
1. Put the plumbing in a safe state#
Run a final regeneration first if the valve remains functional and the existing resin is not being removed because of contamination. This can reduce the hardness load left on the old bed. Do not do this if regeneration causes resin discharge, leakage, blockage, or another unsafe condition.
Then isolate the equipment:
- Stop water-using appliances that could start automatically.
- Unplug or disconnect the softener’s low-voltage power supply.
- Place the softener in bypass according to its valve manual.
- Close a separate upstream isolation valve if one exists and if the plumbing arrangement requires it.
- Open a nearby cold-water faucet downstream to relieve trapped pressure.
- Use the valve’s documented pressure-relief or manual-cycle procedure if required.
- Confirm that pressure and flow have stopped before loosening any connection.
A bypass position alone does not prove that the mineral tank is depressurized. Watts’ Autotrol service instructions direct the technician to shut off the supply or engage bypass and then relieve system pressure. Follow the equivalent procedure for your valve.
Heads up
Never loosen the control valve while the mineral tank is pressurized. If water continues to flow after isolation, the bypass or another shutoff is not sealing. Stop and correct the isolation problem.
2. Disconnect the valve without stressing the plumbing#
Mark the inlet and outlet if they are not already clear. Disconnect the drain line and brine line using the method in the valve manual. Keep small clips, seals, and flow-control components identified and clean.
Support rigid plumbing before separating the bypass or valve. Do not use attached pipes as leverage. Remove the control head from the mineral tank only by the manufacturer’s method; valve bodies, bypass assemblies, retaining clips, and tank threads are not interchangeable service designs.
As the head lifts, guide it straight off the distributor tube. Do not bend or pull the tube sideways.
3. Remove the old media#
There are several workable removal methods: controlled tank inversion, wet vacuuming, or water-assisted extraction. Choose a method that does not damage the tank liner, tank threads, or distributor.
Keep the mineral tank upright until you understand the internal arrangement. If the tank contains a gravel underbed, resin should emerge before most of the gravel. Collect the layers separately when practical. Record their approximate amounts, and compare them with the manual before reloading.
Do not hammer the tank, insert sharp metal tools through the opening, or pull hard on the distributor tube. A fiberglass-wrapped pressure vessel can hide liner damage, and the lower distributor can crack under side loading.
Dispose of the old media according to the resin supplier’s safety information and local waste requirements. Contaminated resin can require different handling from ordinary exhausted sodium-form softener resin.
4. Inspect the mineral tank and distributor assembly#
With the tank empty, inspect these components under good light:
- Tank opening and threads
- Interior liner where visible
- Distributor tube for cracks, distortion, or abrasion
- Lower basket, hub, or laterals for broken slots or loose parts
- Tube height and alignment
- Upper distributor, if fitted
- Control-valve pilot and O-ring surfaces
Pentair instructs installers to inspect the distributor assembly for damage or missing parts and to verify that laterals are secure before media loading. Its troubleshooting guidance also links damaged lower or upper distributors and riser-tube leaks to resin loss.
Replace a damaged distributor with the correct model-specific part. Do not patch a cracked basket or substitute a tube based only on diameter. The tube must engage the valve pilot correctly and remain at the height specified for that valve-and-tank combination.
5. Protect and center the distributor tube#
Seat the lower distributor in its intended position. Verify the tube height before adding anything.
Close the top of the distributor tube with clean tape, a clean plastic bag, or a fitted cap. Pentair specifically requires covering the tube so that media cannot enter it. A resin funnel should surround the protected tube without forcing it off center.
Heads up
One resin bead inside the distributor path can obstruct a valve passage or reach downstream plumbing. Keep the tube covered until loading is complete, then clean the tank opening before removing the cover.
Add enough clean water to cushion the distributor and media if the manufacturer instructs you to do so. Pentair’s commercial loading procedure calls for water above the distributor slots or lateral arms before adding gravel, which protects the assembly during loading. Use the depth stated for your system rather than copying a commercial-tank measurement.
6. Load the gravel underbed, if specified#
A gravel underbed supports distribution in some tanks; other residential systems do not use one. Reload gravel only when the original specification calls for it.
Pour slowly through the resin funnel while keeping the distributor centered. Do not let gravel lift, tilt, or reposition the assembly. Level gravel by gently rocking the tank only if the manufacturer permits that method.
Use the specified gravel grade. Do not substitute landscape gravel, aquarium gravel, or an undocumented blend.
7. Add the replacement resin#
Confirm the bag identity and total volume one more time. Then pour the resin slowly through the funnel. Water in the tank can help the resin settle and reduce uncontrolled dust, but follow the media supplier’s handling directions.
Do not fill unused tank space with extra resin. The empty space above the settled bed is necessary for bed expansion during backwash. Overfilling can restrict expansion and send resin toward the valve.
After loading:
- Remove loose resin from the tank threads and sealing surface.
- Rinse resin from around the distributor-tube opening.
- Verify that the tube remains centered and at the correct height.
- Remove the protective cap without dropping media into the tube.
- Install the specified upper distributor, if present.
- Inspect, replace, and lubricate O-rings as the valve manual directs.
- Lower the valve straight over the distributor tube and engage the tank connection without cross-threading it.
Do not trim the distributor tube unless the applicable manual gives a required dimension and expressly permits field cutting.
8. Reconnect and fill the tank slowly#
Reconnect the bypass, inlet, outlet, drain line, and brine line. Confirm that retaining clips are fully seated and that the drain line remains secure and unobstructed.
Keep the softener in bypass. Restore the building water supply first and inspect the external plumbing. Then follow the valve’s startup procedure to admit water to the mineral tank slowly. A sudden full-pressure opening can move media, trap air, or create water hammer.
The Fleck 5600 manual directs the installer to put the control in service, let the resin tank fill, and open a softened-water faucet until air is released. It then calls for several minutes of backwash before the remaining startup stages. That sequence is evidence for the need to fill slowly, purge air, and backwash, but it is not a universal set of cycle times.
Check every disturbed joint while the tank fills:
- Tank-to-valve seal
- Bypass connections
- Inlet and outlet adapters
- Brine fitting
- Drain connection
- Nearby plumbing unions
Dry each joint and inspect it again under pressure. A damp fitting must be corrected before regeneration.
9. Sanitize only by the applicable manufacturer procedure#
There is no safe universal household-bleach dose for every softener. Manufacturer instructions differ sharply.
For example, one Pentair whole-house softener manual specifies a diluted mixture made with 3/4 cup of unscented 5.25% household bleach and one quart of water, placed in the brine well before manual regeneration. A Watts softener manual specifies only about 3/4 to 1 1/2 fluid ounces of 5.25% household bleach in the brine well. Those instructions must not be interchanged.
Use the procedure written for the exact system or obtain written instructions from its manufacturer. Confirm:
- Permitted sanitizer
- Sanitizer concentration
- Dose
- Whether dilution is required
- Where to add it
- Required contact or cycle time
- Required rinsing or regeneration cycles
Never pour undiluted bleach into a system whose manual requires dilution. Never combine bleach with acids, ammonia, resin cleaner, or another chemical. If no approved sanitation procedure is available, contact the valve or system manufacturer rather than improvising.
10. Complete backwash, rinse, and regeneration#
Newly loaded resin must go through the startup sequence specified for the valve and resin. This normally includes controlled filling, air removal, backwash, rinse, brine preparation, and a complete regeneration, but cycle order and timing vary between control valves.
Backwash reverses or redirects flow to expand and clean the bed. Rapid rinse removes remaining brine or debris and recompacts the resin. The Fleck 5600 startup instructions call for an initial backwash and progression through brine-fill and brine-draw stages. Pentair’s resin data also specifies resin-dependent backwash and rinse conditions, which is why a different resin type can require a settings review.
During startup:
- Watch the drain for a stable flow.
- Stop if resin beads continue to discharge.
- Confirm that the brine level changes during draw and refill.
- Let each required cycle finish.
- Repeat regeneration only when the manufacturer directs it.
- Do not return the water to drinking service until the required rinse is complete.
Persistent resin at the drain suggests an incorrect drain-flow control, excessive backwash rate, damaged distributor, riser leak, or incompatible media. Do not accept continuing resin loss as normal startup behavior.
11. Perform final leak and water checks#
Return the valve fully to service. Open several cold-water fixtures one at a time to release remaining air and flush the downstream lines as directed by the manual.
Inspect all connections immediately, after the regeneration finishes, and again after the system has remained under static pressure. Check the tank neck with a dry towel because a slow O-ring leak can be difficult to see.
Then verify operation:
- Test untreated and treated hardness with an appropriate test method.
- Confirm that the meter records flow, if fitted.
- Confirm that no water flows continuously to the drain in service.
- Check the brine tank against the documented post-regeneration level.
- Look for resin beads at fixtures and at the drain outlet.
- Restore the clock, hardness, capacity, reserve, and regeneration settings from the recorded values or current sizing calculation.
A successful rebed ends with stable service pressure, no leaks, no continuous drain flow, no resin escape, and a measurable reduction in treated-water hardness.
